Hosts: Emily Trotter and John Fugh, Jr

Guest: Laura Marvets

In This Episode: Something is emptying you … something is draining your tank. And whatever that may be, we try to redeem it on our own only to find ourselves grabbing at straws trying to fill ourselves back up. Christian maturation involves the purposeful and deliberate emptying of ourselves while giving God permission to fill us with His Holy Spirit.

Peter invites us to cast our cares onto God because He cares for us. But, when we cast our cares upon Him, do we leave them there? Can you believe that through all the trauma and struggle that God is still for you? Can you believe with confidence that He wants to create something new and fresh in you?

Scriptures: 1 Peter 5:7; Philippians 2:7

Confirmation Testimony: Sandy Coolik

Each generation has a responsibility to share their faith with the next generation. Judges 2:8-15 paints a beautiful yet tragic picture. The generation who witnessed Joshua’s life followed God—A Beautiful Picture. But the generations afterwards grew up “who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel”—A Tragic Picture.

Sharing your faith with a loved one might seem fearful because it requires vulnerability. However, God always qualifies the called when we are willing to share on his behalf. I invite you to hear Sandy Coolik’s story of sharing her faith with a grandchild and hope that will strengthen you to share your faith with someone.

Hosts: Tommy Bridges and John Fugh, Jr.

Guest: Rev. Dr. Shane Green

In This Episode: The purpose of the disciplines are centered around liberation and freedom from the stifling slavery to self and fear. The Christian maturation process is spiritual growth, and disciplines are a means to that end. We don’t do them to get God to love us. We engage in them because God already loves us. Our faith is more about who we are than what we do.

Disciplines give greater meaning to our lives. The more we engage in them, the more we are aware of the Kingdom of God.

First Steps – February 1, 2021

William Tyndale, an early 16th Century British reformer, who translated the New Testament into English against fierce opposition and ultimately martyred because of it, wrote:

The Scripture urges us to do good, not in order to win God’s love but to do good because God loves us. Faith naturally results in good works. If good works are not the result, then it is only a dream, an opinion, a pretension of faith. Notice that fruit does not make a tree good. Fruit is testimony that the tree is good already.

How true this is even today. Many people think in reverse that if we do good things, God will love us. We are already loved. God doesn’t love us more if we do good. Actually, he can’t love us more. He is love and that love is unconditional and constant. This is where we start. Any action stems from that love, because of that love; not to earn what can’t be earned.

If this is your struggle, stop trying to earn what can’t be earned. Before you do anything, allow the Holy Spirit to saturate your being with how much you are loved—not because of any action, but simply because God is love. In fact, stay in that state of being as long as needed. Don’t worry about your actions, they will come soon enough.
